ALUMNI ALIGHT AT AXICA
Sunday, February 26, 2017, 7 pm
Any number of world-class chefs have at one point or another called Berlin home: Take Heinz Beck, who once cooked at the legendary Restaurant Harlekin and now directs the 3-star “La Pergola” in Rome’s Hotel Waldorf-Astoria. Or Johannes King, now living on Sylt with 3 toques and 2 stars. Then there was Bobby Bräuer, formerly of the Brandenburger Hof, now in Munich with 3 toques and 2 stars. We recently lost Matthias Diether (3 toques and 1 star) to Estonia, where he is already being lauded as that country’s finest chef, and Stefan Hartmann (2 toques and 1 star) to Vancouver. The city is also missing the presence of Paul Ivic, who previously cooked in Brandenburg and has now become the first and only chef to earn 3 toques and 1 star based on an exclusively vegetarian concept. In Vienna, no less, the world capital of Schnitzel and beef tips.
Then there’s Finland’s Sauli Kemppainen, who also once manned the kitchen at the Brandenburger Hof to the tune of 3 toques and 1 star. Or Björn Swanson, 2 toques and 1 star, who at Gutshaus Stolpe even today is at least not so far away. Or Philipp Liebisch 2 toques, currently at Hotel bei Schumann in Kirschau, Saxony cooking at an unbelievable level. And that’s just to name a few. Here’s our promise to you: we intend to fetch each and every one of them back to eat! berlin in the coming years. This evening will mark the start of a recurring series, and we won’t rest until we’ve had them all.
We’re certainly starting with a bang:
• Sauli Kemppainen from Moscow
• Philipp Liebisch from Kirschau
• Björn Swanson from Stolpe
• Paul Ivic
The evening will be held in one of our favorite venues, AXICA in the DZ-Bank building at the Brandenburg Gate. Beyond the impressive location, we are perpetually impressed with the architecture, which culminates in a lovely foliated “plenum.” The catering team at AXICA has also distinguished itself as one of the most professional in the city, able to prepare large volumes of fantastic food like few others.
This dedication to perfection makes the AXICA team the perfect partner for eat! berlin
